The Federation of European Risk Management (FERMA) celebrated its 50th anniversary in Madrid on October 20, 21 and 22, 2024. The event brought together many of the most important risk management professionals from Europe and other parts of the world. The meeting, organized by FERMA, is held every two years and brings together specialists representing insurance companies to discuss the most pressing issues. The Madrid event was a resounding success, with the participation of almost 3,000 professionals, doubling the previous number of experts. In addition, there were 20 sessions and more than 40 exhibiting companies.

Proactive strategies

Join the Risk Revolution was the theme chosen by the organizers as the central topic of the meetings. Throughout the three days, the most transcendental aspects of the sector were addressed, such as climate change and the risk of natural catastrophes associated with it, cyber risk (an increasingly emerging threat) and AI (from its enormous possibilities as a tool for human development, without forgetting the unknown dangers it could entail).

FERMA 2024: facing risk, innovation

Charlotte Hedemark, FERMA president, urged the industry to innovate in order to adapt to a volatile situation in which risk is even more uncertain. She stressed the need to move from an old-fashioned risk management mentality to more proactive methods. To this end, risk managers must develop a strategic role in their organizations. They will then be able to deal with both immediate and long-term problems, whether they concern the ecological transition or cyber-risk. The President of FERMA alerted the attendees that only a holistic approach can deal with risks of the caliber of sustainability, climate change, cybersecurity and ESG-ASG (environmental, social and governance) regulations. Hedemark acknowledged that half of risk managers feared that issues such as climate change, cyber-attacks and supply chain risks would no longer be insurable.
